Isocyanates
• Isocyanates are chemicals used in many products, including polyurethane foams and automotive paint
• Extremely hazardous - your skin will absorb isocyanates like a sponge and it does not have a distinctive odor, so you can’t use your sense of smell to detect
• Designed for isocyanate materials that crystallize on the rod, destroying packings and increasing maintenance costs
• Grease port protects the piston rod and packings from damage
• Fast-Flo PN 237129
Products made with isocyanates, such as:
• Adhesives, coatings, and paints
• Automobile bumpers
• Paint at an auto body shop
• Coated fabrics
• Pesticides
• Rigid foam and insulation
• Soft foam in car seats, furniture and mattresses
• Spandex fibers
• Truck bed liners

Application Profile: Paint Kitchens
• What is the application?
- Transferring materials from supply tanks to day tanks used in paint supply and circulation systems
- Materials include
Water and solvent based urethane paints
Water and solvent based epoxy paints
Acid catalyzed materials
Stains, lacquers and varnishes
Moisture sensitive isocyanates used in proportioning
Cleaning and thinning solvents made from MEK, mineral spirits, paint thinners, xylene, etc
– Supplying paints in short run circulation systems where the pressure requirement is low
What pumps are used?
- The most common pump used is the Husky 1050 aluminum pump with two-piece PTFE diaphragms and PTFE or SST balls and seats
- Santoprene is not recommended in paint applications because the material is not compatible with the solvents
- Other pumps seen in paint kitchens include the Husky 307, Husky 515 and Husky 716. Generally you will not see a pump larger than a 1” in paint applications
- 1:1 FastFlo pumps are common for lower flow applications or batching of paints and solvents
-For acid catalyzed materials used for plastic etching, furniture and cabinets, a SST Husky 1050 is preferred
- Twistork agitator packages with AODD pumps are commonly used to keep materials in suspension prior to being transferred or delivered to the applicator
- Husky 307 and 515 pumps are common for single gun, low pressure paint supply systems (BPRs are used to dampen the pulsation)
- Generally an AODD pump will be used to transfer the paint to a day tank where it is then circulated with a higher pressure piston pump
- When paint is being circulated, the material velocity needs to be at 20 meters per minute to keep the paint particles in suspension

•What is the application?
o Transferring light weight (low viscosity) water and solvent based inks as well as UV inks used in printing operations
o The pumps are used to feed tanks or baths and then the ink is applied to the plastic film or paper substrate
o Common applications include inks used for boxes and containers for packaging of consumer products such as food packaging: bread bags, cereal boxes, labeling, etc…
o Most printing equipment comes from large OEMs that make the printing machines used by roll goods converters
o Other applications include pumping solvents for cleaning tanks and equipment
Husky Pumps Used in Ink Industry
• What pumps are used?
o The most common pumps used are the Husky 515 polypropylene and Husky 716 aluminum pumps
PTFE diaphragms and SST seats with PTFE balls are commonly used to handle the inks and cleaning solvents
o Keys to using AODD pumps are their ability to handle the cleaning solvents, stall under pressure, ability to handle abrasive materials and low cost
o Dedicated Fast Flo pumps are also used by ink manufactures during the batching process when they are making colors
o InkMaker is an example of a large equipment supplier that uses AODD pumps on their equipment
